Founder, Lewis Miller Design
Public Art & CultureBorn and raised in California farm country, Lewis Miller developed an appreciation for nature, beauty, and the transformative power of flowers at an early age. At 18, he moved to Seattle to study horticulture and landscape design, beginning a career that would ultimately bring together his love of flowers, gardens, art, and celebration.
After seven years working in design, flowers, and events on the West Coast, Lewis moved to New York City in 2000. In March 2002, he founded Lewis Miller Design (LMD), which quickly established itself as one of New York’s premier floral and event design houses. Today, LMD is known for creating immersive, highly considered environments that feel at once abundant, unexpected, and deeply personal.
Lewis and his team have collaborated with some of the world’s leading names in fashion, art, design, hospitality, and culture, including Dior, Ralph Lauren, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, American Express, and JPMorgan Chase. From intimate private celebrations to large-scale installations and events, Lewis approaches every project with the same instinct: to transform a space, create an emotional response, and make a moment unforgettable.
Among Lewis’s most recognized projects is his transformation of the iconic Channel Gardens at Rockefeller Center. He is also the author of two books celebrating his distinctive approach to flowers and design. His first, Styling Nature: A Masterful Approach to Floral Arrangement, was published by Rizzoli New York in 2016 and received praise from The New York Times and Martha Stewart Living, going on to multiple printings, including a Japanese edition. His second book, Flower Flash, published by Monacelli in 2021, chronicles the evolution of the public floral installations that have become synonymous with his work.
In 2016, Lewis brought flowers beyond the walls of private events and into the streets of New York with the creation of the Flower Flash. Since then, he has created more than 100 public floral street-art installations, transforming unexpected corners of cities with flowers. What began as a simple gesture—a desire to give something beautiful back to the city he loves—became a joyful and unexpected form of public art. Appearing before dawn in trash cans, phone booths, public sculptures, subway entrances, and other familiar corners of the city, Flower Flashes transform the ordinary into something fleeting, fantastical, and entirely unexpected.
Whenever possible, flowers are repurposed from LMD events and given a second life on the street. Installed quickly, often in under thirty minutes, the Flashes are intended to create a moment of surprise and generosity for anyone who happens upon them. At the heart of the project is the same idea that drives all of Lewis’s work: flowers have the ability to shift a mood, transform a space, and create an immediate emotional connection.
Since its inception, Lewis has brought the Flower Flash beyond New York, creating installations in Los Angeles, Palm Beach, Miami, Charlottesville, Nashville, and London. No matter the city, the spirit remains the same: a spontaneous act of beauty created simply to surprise people, interrupt the everyday, and bring a little joy to the streets.
Lewis was also featured in Phaidon’s Blooms: Contemporary Floral Design, celebrating some of the most innovative floral artists working around the world today.
Whether designing an extraordinary celebration, transforming a landmark, or filling an unexpected corner of a city with flowers, Lewis’s work is ultimately about one thing: creating beauty that makes people feel something.
